Fishers Facts
Fishers, Indiana is a strong and vibrant community!
|
Fishers is located in Hamilton County north of Indianapolis between
Noblesville and Indianapolis along Highway 37 on the banks of the White
River near Ft Benjamin Harrison and Geist Reservoir. The county seat of
Hamilton County, Indiana, is Noblesville.
In
June of 1872, Salathiel Fisher divided up his land into lots for a town. The
Post Office was established under the name of "Fisher's Switch" on
September 20, 1872. On February 27, 1891, "Fisher's Station" was
approved and declared a legal corporation. On April 28, 1893,
the post office dropped the apostrophe in "Fisher's Switch." On
September 15, 1908, the post office dropped "Switch" making the town
"Fishers" as it is known today. |
Like many new towns in its era, Fishers grew up around the railroad. The
train station is located in the center of town and houses the Hamilton
County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Fishers Chamber of Commerce and
the Hoosier Heritage Port Authority.
The sister city of Fishers is Billericay, England. The search for a sister
city began in 1996. A town of over 700 years, Billericay was also home to a
number of individuals who sailed on the Mayflower to America. It is now a
modern thriving center of business and located very close to London,
allowing a daily interchange of commuters.
The Ambassador House is one of the oldest existing structures in Hamilton
County. It was built more than 170 years ago near the corner of 96th Street
and Allisonville Road. Addison Harris, prominent Indianapolis attorney and
U.S. Ambassador to Austria-Hungary, called this home.
