Man rescued from Geist
Reservoir
A man may owe his life to the woman who helped pull him from his vehicle
after his brakes failed and sent him into Geist Reservoir early Thursday
morning.
The man was driving southbound on Geist Road at around 1:50 am,
approaching Fall Creek Road. As he attempted to stop for the
intersection, his brakes failed to respond and his car went through the
intersection, through a treeline, and landed upside-down in about 4 feet
of water.
Paula Hughel heard the crash behind her home on Spruance Court, and ran
to the water to assist. She waded into the lake and assisted the driver
from his vehicle and to shore, where she and her son, Andrew, tended to
the man's wounds until the Fishers Fire Department arrived.
The man's injuries were not life threatening, and he was transported to
Riverview Hospital for further treatment.
Hughel said the training she received while going through Cub Scouts and
Boy Scouts with her sons paid off during the incident.
Fishers Fire Department divers checked the car to verify there were no
other occupants, then assisted Garner's Towing with removing the vehicle
from the reservoir.
