Man arrested in Fishers
gas theft
On August 8th, 2008 officers arrested Cavin J. Hammond (51, Ingalls)
when he was caught stealing gasoline from the Hamilton Southeastern fuel
tanks located near the HSE Administration Building on Cumberland Road in
Fishers. The gasoline was taken from the pump used by the Town of
Fishers and the Fishers Police Department.
An off-duty Fishers police officer, Lt. Todd Crowder, witnessed Cavin
Hammond pumping gasoline into one gallon jugs. Hammond told the officer
that he was a bus driver and also worked with the grounds keeper and
used the gasoline for the lawn mowers. On-duty officers arrived and
detained Hammond until the HSE Transportation Director, Jim White,
arrived. Mr. White confirmed that Hammond was a school bus driver and
told officers that Hammond did not have permission to take gasoline for
personal use and was also not a grounds keeper.
Cavin Hammond was arrested and transported to the Hamilton County Jail.
Officers found 22 gallons of gasoline in several jugs and containers in
Hammonds van parked on the property. An audit of Hammond’s fuel usage
found that he has pumped a total of 313.2 gallons of gasoline since May
6, 2008.
